Internship, job, summer program, or community project. Make it purposeful and reflective of your interests.
11th Grade The Critical Year
October
Take the PSAT / NMSQT
This is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. Prepare thoroughly and review your score report.
Fall Semester
Register & Prepare for SAT / ACT
Choose your exam(s), enroll in a prep course or self-study program, and schedule testing for winter or spring.
Fall Semester
Build Your College List
Aim for 10–15 schools across reach, match, and safety tiers. Research for academic and cultural fit.
January – March
First SAT / ACT Official Exam
Take the exam for the first time. Most students test 2–3 times. Plan retakes based on your score.
Spring Semester
Visit College Campuses
Tour 3–5 schools in person or virtually. Attend info sessions and talk to current students.
Spring — Before Summer
Request Letters of Recommendation
Ask 2–3 teachers and your counselor before school ends. Give them your brag sheet and deadlines.
April – May
Take AP Exams
Scores of 4–5 demonstrate college readiness and may earn college credit. Prepare throughout the semester.
Summer
Draft Your Common App Essay
Brainstorm, outline, and write. Aim for an authentic story only you can tell. Get feedback from a trusted reader.
12th Grade The Home Stretch
August – September
Open Common App & Finalize List
Create your account, confirm your final school list, and complete all profile sections. Set up school portals.
October – Nov 1
Submit Early Decision / Action Apps
ED/EA deadlines are typically Nov 1–15. Confirm essays are polished and recommendations submitted.
October – February
File FAFSA & CSS Profile
Submit FAFSA as early as October 1. Many schools require the CSS Profile for institutional aid. Earlier is better.
October – November
Retake SAT / ACT If Needed
October and November are the last sittings for most Regular Decision deadlines. Know your target scores.
December – January 1
Submit Regular Decision Applications
Most RD deadlines fall Jan 1–15. Submit at least one week early and confirm all materials are received.
March – April
Compare Financial Aid Award Letters
Read each letter carefully — grants vs. loans vs. work-study. Calculate true out-of-pocket cost at each school.
April – May 1
Make Your Final Decision
Revisit campuses if needed. The National Decision Day deadline is May 1. Submit your enrollment deposit.
